Walking Stick Length

The Correct Length for Walking Sticks

The length of a stick is important for a walking stick if you need it as a walking aid to give you support if you are unsteady on your feet or have a disability.

How to measure the correct stick length:-

For short sticks commonly known as walking sticks which are used around the height of the hip. Stand up as straight as you can and measure from the floor to the crease of the wrist. This allows the arm to be locked straight when your full weight is applied to the stick. It is advisable to get help when measuring because if you try to do it yourself there will be a tendency to lower your shoulder as you look down and your stick may then end up too short!

For long sticks (hiking sticks, thumb sticks etc) the measurement should be from the floor to the base of the breastbone.

If the stick is not needed for support or, as a walking aid then the length is less important and the following lengths will usually be suitable:-

The standard length for a gentlemans walking stick is 36"

The standard length for a lady's walking stick is 33"

The standard length for a long stick such as a Thumbstick, Crook, Market Stick, Hiking Stick, or a Carved Head Stick is 48" to where it is held.
